Nail Surgery: Long-Term Relief for Ingrown, Infected, and Damaged Toenails ![]()
If you're struggling with recurring ingrown toenails, nail infections, or painful nail deformities, you know how much they can interfere with daily life. Nail problems might seem small, but they can lead to persistent discomfort, infection, and even difficulty walking when left untreated.
At Third Coast Foot & Ankle, we offer safe, in-office nail surgery procedures that provide lasting relief—so you can get back to walking comfortably and confidently.
What Is Nail Surgery?
Nail surgery is a minor, outpatient procedure used to remove part or all of a toenail that is causing pain or infection. It is commonly performed to treat:
-
Chronic ingrown toenails that don’t respond to conservative care
-
Infected or inflamed nail beds
-
Thickened, deformed, or fungal nails
-
Nail trauma or damage due to injury
Our goal is not just to relieve your current symptoms, but to prevent the problem from coming back.
Types of Nail Surgery We Perform
At Third Coast Foot & Ankle, your treatment is tailored to your condition. Common nail procedures include:
1. Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA)
Only the ingrown or damaged portion of the nail is removed. This is ideal for patients with localized pain or swelling on one side of the nail.
2. Total Nail Avulsion (TNA)
The entire toenail is removed, typically for nails that are severely infected, deformed, or beyond repair.
3. Matrixectomy
If nail regrowth would likely cause more problems, we may remove the nail root (matrix) with a chemical (phenol) or laser, preventing that part of the nail from growing back.
What to Expect During Nail Surgery
-
The procedure is done right in our office, usually in 30 minutes or less.
-
Your toe will be numbed with local anesthesia, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure.
-
You can go home the same day, and most patients return to regular activities within a few days.
-
We’ll provide instructions on keeping the toe clean, covered, and protected during healing.
